A Week in Review - October 15 - 19

Oh. My. Goodness.  I cannot believe how much we did this week!  Get ready for a long post...

This week we met a new friend, Mat Man.  Mat Man is part of our K4 writing curriculum, Handwriting Without Tears (HWT).  Mat Man teaches us how to draw a person with all of the parts.  The kiddos were so excited to learn the song and build him.  To begin the lesson students first drew a self-portrait.  Then, we sang the song and built Mat Man.

Huck and Sasha building Mat Man's ears (AM).
Bennett building Mat Man's arms (AM).
La'Mya and Kennedy building Mat Man's feet (AM).
Willy building Mat Man's hair (AM).
Nyleah building Mat Man's arms (PM).
Jo Lin and Allie building Mat Man's hands (PM).
Miles and Derrick building Mat Man's feet (PM).
Mat Man!

After we were finished, students went back to their seats and drew themselves again.  Wow, what a difference!!!
Willy's before and after (AM).
Francisco's before and after (AM).
Brinya's before and after (PM).
Miles' before and after (PM).
Katharine's before and after (PM).
Here is an example of what the lesson looks like.  Your child may come home singing *lots* of new songs!

In math we have been practicing counting a lot!  We practiced counting in lots of funny ways and practiced counting using 1:1 correspondence.  One way we practiced using 1:1 correspondence was creating an age collage.  Students counted out various materials (depending on their age) and glued them down to create a collage.

Cheyanne, Ella, Sasha, and Anna creating their age collage (AM).
Willy, Yiwen, Noah, and Francisco creating their age collage (AM).
Sullivan, Hayden and Reese creating their age collage (PM).
Jo Lin, Nyelah, Allie and Monic creating their age collage (PM).
Allie's age collage (PM).
Brinya's age collage (PM).
Yiwen's age collage (AM)
Kennedy's age collage (AM).
Another way we practiced counting using 1:1 correspondence was by going on a bear hunt!  First we read the book "We're Going on a Bear Hunt."  Then, we went on our own bear hunt.  Students hunted around the room for five bears.  Once they had their five bears, students put each bear in one of five boxes.  We had a blast hunting and counting bears.  I sent the counting strips home so that they could hunt for things at home!

Hunting (AM)!

Huck counted out his five bears (AM).

Sullivan counted out his five bears (PM).
Nyelah counted out her five bears (PM).
In science, we continued to learn about pumpkins.  We drew one new thing we learned about pumpkins, compared the inside of an apple and pumpkin, and continued to try to grow a pumpkin inside of a pumpkin!

One new thing Noah learned about pumpkins is they grow from the ground (AM).
One thing Cate learned about pumpkins is there is pulp in the pumpkin (PM).

We also enjoyed our Mystery Readers and Fresh Fruit Friday snack!

Bennett's dad was our AM Mystery Reader!
Cate's mom was our PM Mystery Reader!
Sasha brought apples for our Fresh Fruit Friday snack (AM)!
Miles brought bananas for our Fresh Fruit Friday snack (PM).  I forgot to take a picture.  Sorry!

Please remember that Scholastic Book Orders are due Sunday, October 28th!  Also, there is no school (PM  only) on Thursday, October 25th.  Finally, there is no school (both AM and PM) on Friday, October 26th!

I will post our field trip pictures in a day or two (there are so many)!

Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Love,
Miss Lucas
